A hot spring source was discovered on the banks of the Chikuma River in 1868 and Togura Onsen opened in 1893 followed by Kamiyamada Onsen in 1903.
Together they are known as Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen.
Sasaya Hotel has been popular with literary greats such as the novelist Naoya Shiga.
One wing of the inn was built in 1932 and was designed in an avant-garde style of Japanese ryokan by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, Arata Endo. It is still used for accommodation today.
