On the grounds of Chorakuji Temple is a stone memorial dedicated to master haiku poet Basho Matsuo, built in 1769 by Basho devotee Shirao Kaya and local supporters.
Elsewhere on the grounds are 45 stones engraved with poems giving the temple its unique character.
Chorakuji Temple is of the Tendai Branch of Buddhism and is #14 of Nagano’s 33 Temple Pilgrimage.
