Obasute Terraced Rice Fields

During the Warring States Period, rice paddies were carved out of the hillside and irrigated using water from a creek.
The terrace was situated in a way that the moon reflected in the surface of each individual field, called “Tagoto no Tsuki”.
The terracing was increased to cover the entire hillside during the Edo Period after the Oike reservoir was built ensuring ample supply for irrigation.
40 of the 64.3 hectares designated as Important Cultural Scenery are terraced rice fields numbering around 1,500 paddies of various sizes.
