Nishiki-e Woodblock Print
This piece depicts a group of ladies watching the full moon rise over Mount Kyodai from the moon-viewing pavilion at Chorakuji Temple, with the moon reflecting in the surface of the terraced rice paddies (known as “Tagoto no Tsuki”) and Basho and his pupil Etsujin walking among the fields.
Nishiki-e prints are a more colorful variety of ukiyo-e popularized during the Meiji Era.
Chikanobu is particularly known for his prints made in the late 19th century of beautiful women.
